A Glimpse into the Mind of a 5-year-old

Tonight, Evan's devotional was "Being a fisher of men". It asked who in his family Evan could tell about Jesus. After a brief refresher on why we need to tell people about Jesus, I added something to the effect of "So if we have people in our family who don't have Jesus in their heart and they die, where would they go?" Here's how the rest of the conversation went:

Evan-"Hell"

Me-"Right, and what about you?"

E-"Heaven" (pause, followed by) "and then I would never see them again"

Me- "Right. That's another reason we need to tell them about Jesus, so we can be with them in Heaven"

E-"Mommy, can you look and see Hell from up in Heaven?"

Me-"No, you can't"

E-"Oh." (long pause) "Mommy, I don't know how God can live in Heaven because it is in space and people can't breath in outer space" (apparently he's been learning in science this week about stars and space)

Me-"Well, it might be too hard for you to understand right now. Heaven really isn't in outer space, it is beyond outer space. " After a long pause, "It's kinda hard to explain to you right now exactly where Heaven is, bub. I'm sorry, when you're bigger you'll understand better"

Evan-"Hey, mommy, you could type Heaven in the internet and it'll show you a map to where it is and maybe what it looks like, too, and maybe God in person, too. Can we do that tomorrow?"

How do you respond to that?? I'm searching for the right words to say, and all I can think of is:

Me-"Maybe we can, bub, we'll see"

Gracie-isms

Gracie-ism={things Gracie says that are cute/funny}

#1
Gracie says "Mommy, I'm just finking 'bout what I wanna be when I grow up"

I said "Really? What do you wanna be?"

She said "Um, just I fink a officer"

I said "Oh! That's a good idea! Like daddy is an officer?"

To which she covers her face really quick, acting shy, and says "Yeah".

#2
While eating lunch, Gracie did something (I can't remember what) and I kinda chuckled at her. Apparently she didn't like that, because she says (as she's trying her best to roll her eyes) "Mommy, don't respect me". Meaning "don't disrespect me". Which, of course, made me laugh harder.

#3
Gracie wasn't feeling good yesterday. On the way home from mom's house, Evan was trying to get her to play with him in the back seat and I didn't want her getting nauseous, so I said "Evan, I don't want her playing right now. Gracie, just sit still and look out your window."

Of course, they both say "Why?".

I said "Because I don't want her getting carsick and throwing up in the car"

Evan says "Oh, I get it" (his new favorite line)

Gracie response "But Mommy, I can't make the car sick"

Gotta love her!

Back to School

Evan's officially in 1st grade!!!

He looks so old! He's growing up way too fast!

Gracie is still adjusting to not having Bubby here to play with her all day. Today she played dress-up and colored, but that is about all the "playing" I could get her to do for the first few hours she was awake!

(Check out how good she is coloring in the lines!!! So proud of her)

"Where a Kid Can Be a Kid"

Let me preface this by saying that Nick and the boys took off and remained on the move the whole time we were there, while I (armed with the camera) stayed with Gracie. That is why there are more pictures of her. Just wanted to make it clear that there's no strange conspiracy of loving one child more than the other! =)

"I Don't Fink I'm Growing Up"

Gracie gets out of her bed, comes to the top of the stairs, and says "Mommy, I don't fink I'm growing up, cuz I don't feel me growing up."

I say, "Gracie, you are growing up, but you're not going to be able to feel it" (like she'll actually understand that, huh?)

She says "Oh. Cuz my brain is making me grow up?"

I say "Yeah"

As she's heading back into her room, "But I still don't fink I'm growing up"

Wow! The questions my kids come up with!
